From consultation to action
In 2023, Friends of Roseburn Park asked local residents and park users what improvements they would like to see in the park. The consultation helped us understand what matters most to the people who use Roseburn Park and has helped shape our plans for its future.
What people wanted
The consultation asked park users about a wide range of possible improvements. There was particularly strong support for better facilities, seating, paths and opportunities for recreation.
The wider vision for Roseburn Park
The 2023 consultation considered a range of possible improvements across Roseburn Park, including new facilities, paths, seating, recreation areas and improvements around the café.
Outdoor Gym
We want to create an accessible outdoor fitness area that can be enjoyed by people of different ages and abilities.
The proposed gym would include a range of equipment designed to provide different forms of exercise, including cardiovascular, strength and mobility activities.
Other proposed equipment includes a chest press/seated rower and assisted pull-up equipment. The gym would also include approximately 50 m² of safety surfacing.
A space for young people
The proposed teen area would provide a dedicated place for young people to meet, socialise and be active.
The current proposal includes:
- Basketball hoop and goal end
- Sheltered seating
- Space for young people to meet
- Safety surfacing
Friends of Roseburn Park proposes locating the teen area near Murrayfield Ice Rink, separated from the main children’s play area and away from nearby homes.
Where would the new facilities go?
Friends of Roseburn Park’s preferred layout retains the toddler play area, places the outdoor gym beside the embankment and positions the teen area towards the Murrayfield Ice Rink end of the park.
What residents said
The consultation generated a wide range of comments. Many people welcomed the proposed improvements, while others raised concerns about maintaining open space, managing anti-social behaviour and choosing the right locations.
“Teen area and trim trail would be wonderful.”
“Pétanque and outdoor gym would be at the top of my list.”
“Really like the idea of the park having more things to do and being inviting to all ages.”
“It is very important not to fill the space too tightly – keep a feeling of openness.”
Improving paths around the park
The consultation also considered improving walking routes around the park. Different materials could be considered depending on appearance, accessibility, durability and cost.
A more natural walking route
A path around part of the park could provide a more reliable all-weather walking route while retaining a relatively natural appearance.
The 2023 consultation showed that 80% of respondents supported or were comfortable with a walking track along the southern boundary of the park.
Possible path surfaces
A number of different surfacing options have been considered. Each has different characteristics in terms of appearance, accessibility, drainage, maintenance and durability.
The examples below illustrate some of the types of surfaces that could be considered. No final surface has been selected.
Current estimated project costs
The current estimated cost of delivering the outdoor gym and teen area is £52,593.
Friends of Roseburn Park will seek funding and community support to help turn these proposals into reality. These figures are current estimates and may change as the project develops.
